At nearly eight kilometers long, the Karawanks Tunnel is Austria’s fourth-longest tunnel and a key link in the transportation network between Austria and Slovenia. With more than 30,000 vehicles passing through daily during peak hours, the single-tube route became a bottleneck that regularly caused traffic jams and long delays. ASFINAG and its partner STRABAG faced the challenge of not only increasing capacity but also bringing safety up to the latest technical standards.
